Chapter Six

Brusque and taciturn, the physician shooed the earl and his lady from the room without a thought for their consequence. He rummaged through his bag, retrieved a fistful of instruments and peered at the unconscious Logan over his pince-nez.

“Hot water and rags, my girl, and be quick about it. I need to assess the damage this young fool has done to himself.”

Molly swallowed when he cut away the bindings and she saw blood trickle lazily from the ragged gash. Her belly heaved, threatening to disgorge the sweets she’d greedily consumed. She looked away before her weak stomach had her succumbing to a swoon and busied herself with getting the supplies the doctor required.

The sawbones washed his hands then poked and prodded Logan’s mangled flesh. “Hmm, he’s a lucky old son—hit a rib, and missed his organs and arteries. Now all we have to worry about is it turning septic.” He looked up at Molly when she moaned. “Not afraid of a little blood, are you?”

Taking a flask from his bag, he poured some of its content over the wound, and Logan’s lax face twisted into a grimace. The doctor grunted and took a long swig, grinned and saluted Molly with the bottle when he heard her outraged gasp.

“Brandy. Disinfects and warms the cockles.” He took out a needle, threaded it with catgut, then stitched up Logan’s wound with deft expertise.

He sewed a fine seam, Molly thought, as she suppressed a shudder.

“Now, I want you to sit with him. If he develops a fever, send for me immediately.” He closed his bag with a snap, gave her a brief nod and trotted from the room, cheerful. She didn’t know how he could be so chipper after sticking his fingers into a person’s insides. It was enough to put one off their food.

Molly studied the unconscious Logan. He looked so vulnerable. She just hoped he survived to love, realize his dreams and ambitions, and live a long, happy life.

Logan stirred, blinked at her and sighed. “Ah, I haven’t gone to pay my respects to the Devil yet. I have a powerful thirst riding me, Molly.”

“I’ll get you some water.”

“Water? I need something more potent to revive me.” He levered himself up off the bed with his elbows.

With an impatient tsk, she grasped his shoulders and pushed him back. “Lie there. Your idiocy may undo the doctor’s fine seam. I’ll shackle you to this bed if I have to.” She fussed with his bandage to make sure it hadn’t shifted.

“Want to have me at your mercy, do you? Well, I’ll relish your ministrations, my love, if you’ll move your hand a little lower to ease the ache I have there.” His eyes twinkled.

Logan’s playfully sensual grin eased her worry.

At his appeal, she glanced between his thighs and sniggered. His libido hadn’t been affected by his brush with death. “It’ll be a long time before you’re up for any love-play my lad.”

“Climb up here and give me a chance to prove you wrong.
